These bags are made from potato starch — sourced from non-GMO starch potatoes grown only for starch production, not as food — blended with a certified, fully compostable polymer, with no plasticisers added. Starch potatoes carry more amylopectin than corn or wheat starch, which is what gives the bags their structural strength, so they hold up better than bags made from corn starch.

Using potato starch also means no diversion from food supplies, since these potatoes are too starchy to be food-grade. Producing the same amount of starch from potatoes instead of corn takes less land, and potatoes need only normal rainfall rather than the irrigation corn requires.

Why compost

A significant share of landfill waste each year — food scraps, yard trimmings, non-recyclable paper — is material that could be composted under the right conditions. Left in landfill, this organic material releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Diverting it to municipal or commercial compost facilities where available helps preserve natural resources.
